The old village of Perouges in France

The medieval village of Perougesis a charming medieval village located in the Ain region of France. It is famous for its preserved medieval architecture and its picturesque cobbled streets. Dating back to the 13th century, Perouges was once an important trading center and the capital of the Dauphiné region.

The village is about 20 miles from the city of Lyon. It was voted one of the most beautiful villages in France

Perouges has some of the best preserved medieval buildings in France.

You can park outside the village ramparts by one of the two entrances to the village.

The Porte d`en Haut from here you can walk the walls and the village it is about a mile.

The village has a lot of bars, cafes and restaurants. .Places to eat in the village price start from about £15.If you need a rest from walking round the narrow streets

Perouges was founded in 1264 by the Count of Savoy, Amadeus V. It was later taken over by the Dauphiné region in 1349. During the 16th century, Perouges was a major center for weaving and other trades. It was also an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Places to See: The village of Perouges is a great place to explore the history and architecture of the Middle Ages. The cobbled streets are lined with beautiful 16th-century houses, and the old town hall (maison communale) is a great example of medieval architecture. Other attractions include the Church of Saint-Nicolas, the Town Hall, the Tower of the Clock and the Chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Vignes.

Nearby: Perouges is surrounded by the beautiful Ain countryside, making it a great place to explore nature. There are many hiking trails, as well as horseback riding and cycling routes. Other nearby attractions include the historic town of Bourg-en-Bresse, the Grand Colombier mountain, the Château de Brou and the Château de Culoz.
