A brief history of the markets The markets of Porte de Clignancourt have been around for over 150 years and have become a must-visit destination for those looking for a unique shopping experience in Paris. Originally established as a market for second-hand goods and antiques, the markets have grown to become a sprawling complex of over 15 markets, each with its own speciality. |
The markets were established in the mid-19th century when the city of Paris decided to construct the Boulevard Peripherique, which cut through the Saint-Ouen area. The construction left many people without homes, and they began selling their second-hand goods and antiques in the area. The market grew rapidly, and soon traders from all over the city were coming to sell their wares.
During the early part of the 20th century, the markets became the center of the French antiques trade, and many famous antique dealers set up shop in the area.
If you want to stay in the centre of Paris to shop there is a nice antique centre next to the Louvre museum.
