The markets were established in the mid-19th century when the city of Paris decided to construct the Boulevard Peripherique, which cut through the Saint-Ouen area. The construction left many people without homes, and they began selling their second-hand goods and antiques in the area. The market grew rapidly, and soon traders from all over the city were coming to sell their wares.
During the early part of the 20th century, the markets became the center of the French antiques trade, and many famous antique dealers set up shop in the area.
