The main street into Mortain

Mortain is built on the top of a rocky hillside with greats views.We came to the town to see the waterfalls there are two main one that flow down the side of the valley.You can park on the large car park in the middle of the town and walk down a wooded track to see the smaller waterfall.The large waterfall is just out of town you can park nearby. The town has a weekly market and a good selection of shops and cafes to walk round.

The History of Mortain

Mortain was first established in the 10th century by the Count of Mortain, a Norman nobleman. It became a strategic location for military defense, due to its strategic position and its natural fortifications provided by the surrounding hills. The town was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, but was rebuilt in the 15th century and its fortifications restored. By the 19th century, it had become an important industrial and trading center.

Places to Visit in Mortain

Mortain is home to a number of impressive medieval buildings, including the 11th-century Church of Saint-Pierre and the impressive Château de Mortain, which was built in the 12th century. Other historic sites include the Porte de la Ville and the Tour de Guet, which are both remnants of the town's medieval fortifications.

Nearby Attractions

Mortain is just a short drive away from some of Normandy's most beautiful attractions. The stunning Mont Saint-Michel is located just 25 miles away, and the D-Day beaches are less than an hour's drive away. The Jardins de Brocéliande, a magical garden inspired by Arthurian legend, is also nearby. The region is also known for its delicious cuisine; be sure to sample the local delicacies such as andouillettes and Calvados.
