Places to visit and stay in the old town of Dinan

Dinan is a Breton town and one of France's walled towns. The old town is on the banks of the Rance river and is surrounded by parks and trees.

If you are travelling from the UK the ferry to St Malo is best. You can fly from Stansted Airport to Dinan.

The Rue du Jerzual, a steep, picturesque street lined with half timbered houses. Quite a few local artists and craftsmen live and work here.

The medieval town centre is made up of cobbled streets and old houses shops, and cafes. The town is very busy all year round July and August are best avoided.We have visited in June and September when it is cooler and less busy.

Places to visit the Jacobins Theatre dating from 1224 and the Château de Dinan. Or the church of St Saviour's Basilica. Just behind the church you get a great view of the river and a large viaduct.

You can take a boat trip from the coast about a 10 mile trip. That takes you through the fields and woods past some very large houses.

Visit the Dinan Museum which has a wide variety of artefacts from prehistoric to modern times.

See Chateau de la Riviere which is a beautiful 16th century chateau with a beautiful park and gardens. Walk along the Royal Promenade which has a long promenade leading to the beach.

Take a trip to the picturesque fishing village of Ploumanac'h. Explore the Abbey of Notre Dame de Bon Secours which has a beautiful cloister and chapel. Or visit the city's beautiful medieval harbour.

You can drive to the neighbouring villages of Lannion and Vannes.

While you are in the area, the coast around St Malo is worth a visit. We liked Cap Frehel with its lighthouse.
