Cherbourg
Cherbourg-Octeville is a Port and city in Normandy.It is about 50 miles from the D Day landing beaches.
We have been to Normandy several times but this was our first visit to the Cotentin Peninsula. We arrived in Cherbourg by Brittany Ferries from Poole on the morning crossing it takes about 4 hours. We were clear of the docks by 2 pm and had only 3 miles to drive to our Hotel.
We stayed at the port for 7 nights B&B there are plenty of Hotels at all price ranges in Cherbourg.We found ours by searching here for the best deal
Cherbourg makes an ideal base to see the area.There are plenty of hidden villages and little coves to explore within 20 miles.The WW2 sites bunkers museums and beaches are all around an hours drive away.The Port has a lot to offer with shopping centres,parks old buildings mixed with the new.The area round the harbour is very nice and busy.There are lots of cafe/bars and restaurants round the marina to watch the boats and Tall ships.
If you are unlucky with the weather you can go to La Cite de la Mer a Maritime museum.You can go round the nuclear submarine Redoutable and a exhibit on the Titanic.The post code is 50100 you can not miss the large building on the seafront.It took us about 4 hours to get round we missed the underwater bit.We enjoyed our stay in Cherbourg we left on the evening sailing to Poole.The ferry leaves about 10pm and gets to Poole for 7am so you get a good nights sleep.

8. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial: Pay your respects to those who lost their lives in the D-Day landings at this poignant memorial.
9. The Val de Saire: Take a drive in the picturesque countryside of the Val de Saire and explore the charming villages and small towns.
10. The D-Day Beaches: Visit the iconic beaches where the Allies landed on D-Day and learn about the history of this pivotal moment in World War II.
