A trip to the Blockhaus at Eperlecques V2 rocket site in Northern France is an interesting and educational experience. Located in the Pas-de-Calais region,
The site was once the main assembly plant for the V2 ballistic missiles during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the Blockhaus, including the interior of the bunker, the command center, and the launch pads.
Guided tours are available, which provide insight into the history of the site and the V2 weapon. Additionally, there are a number of interactive exhibits, including a 3D virtual reality experience and a documentary about the V2 production process.
The site is near to St Omer if you are driving from Calais. Take the A26 towards St Omer then the N 43 it is well signed posted. You turn off the N 43 down a narrow road to the village of Eperlecques.
The site is in the forest just through the village.
The base was built in 1943 to assemble and launch the V2 rocket.
The photos below show the bunker it is 75metres long x 35 metres wide and 33metres high.They used 90,000 tons of concrete in the construction of the bunker from an onsite cement factory.
The Bunker
You enter the site through a shop where you can buy books on the site in most languages.
There are also several items of interest from WWll.
On our first visit in October 2009 the price was 7 euro to walk round the site.We have just visited the site again in June 2013 and the price is now 9 euros.It is still good value to see this historical site
As you walk toward this massive building you pass the railway wagons in which the prisoners were taken to the site to work.
You will see WWll vehicles and guns also bombs from the many air raids.
There is a good sound system in several languages which explains what you are viewing as you go round the site.
It includes the loud sound of an air attack on the base.

We went inside one of the trucks whch were quite small. They would carry 6 horses or 40 men
