Peronne

Peronne The town is located in the Somme department of northern France. It is best known for its rich history, which dates back to the Middle Ages. During World War I, Peronne was the site of a number of important battles, including the Battle of the Somme, and the town still bears physical reminders of this conflict in its streets. We had decided to start our tour of the Battlefields of the Somme from Peronne. Last year we visited Albert and the towns at the other end of the Somme.

Peronne today is a busy medium size town with good shopping streets and plenty of cafes. Considering the town was completely destroyed in 1917. It was also Bombed and burned in May 1940 by the German air force.

The Photo shows the river Somme form the old Chateau you can hire a boat for a trip down the river.

After a walk round the town centre we had a coffee in the cafe in the photo and visited the tourist information centre next door. We found lots of brochure and the helpful staff who spoke English and told us some of the places to visit in the area.

Just across the road is the museum we had come to see the "Historial de la Grande Guerre" the Great War museum. You can see the Museum here We drove round the WWl sites but you can take a Battlefield tour from 132, avenue des Australiens 80200 in Peronne

Visitors can take a day trip to the Somme Valley, which is home to a range of picturesque towns and villages, as well as numerous battlefields and memorials from World War I. Another popular destination is Amiens, which is the capital of the Somme department and home to the impressive Gothic-style Amiens Cathedral.
