Avignon is a beautiful city in southeastern France located along the Rhône River. It is best known for its historical landmarks and cultural attractions, making it a popular tourist destination. It is about 55 miles from Marseille.
The town is a mixture of old and new it has some very nice parks and gardens.
The town is best known for its bridge the Bridge of Avignon or "Pont d'Avignon. Made famous in the song. The bridge was used as link between the residences of the cardinals and the Popes' Palace inside the city walls.

You can see in the photos all that is left of the bridge. It was built with 22 arches there are 4 left
The Popes' Palace
The city of Avignon has a long and rich history, dating back to the first century AD when it was founded by the Romans. From the 11th century to the 14th century, the city was the seat of the papacy and home to several popes. The city is also home to the famous Palais des Papes, a magnificent Gothic palace which was once the residence of the popes. Other historical landmarks include the 12th century Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral, the Roman remains of the Pont Saint Bénézet, and the 14th century Petit Palais.
The Palais des Papes is a gothic style building more a fortress than of a palace.
You have to go inside to get to get a sense of the richness of the papal court.
There is a pedestrian area with several streets full of shops.
You will find a large variety of well stocked luxury shops.
Plus ceramics and pottery and other specialities of the Provence region.
There is a flea market on Sunday mornings and a farmers market on Saturday between May and October.
I was told they also have a Christmas Market 2 to 30 December
The town has a wide selection of restaurants you should be able to find one to suit your tastes. A local Map of the town
If you have the energy climb up the steep road to the park at Rocher des Doms on Montee du Moulin off place du Palais. it is worth for the view

Avignon is a great place to explore for tourists, with a variety of attractions and activities. Nearby attractions include the Alpilles Mountains, the stunning villages of Les Baux-de-Provence and Gordes, and the picturesque Provencal countryside. There are also several vineyards and wineries in the area, where visitors can sample some of the region's best wines.
